  Drowes Salmon Fishery News

First Day Of September

1 September 2010

Water levels have held steady at, or just under .5 metres on the gauge for much of the past month. There were consistent runs of grilse, many of them small fish from 2 to 4lbs, throughout the month. Despite good numbers of fish present, the fish often seemed dour and reluctant to take. Among the anglers who reported fish during the past month were ;
John Parkinson had a 3lbs fish on shrimp from the Wash Stones, M. Kruse had a 3lbs fish on Cascade from the Mill Pool, M. Wilson had 2 fish of 2 and 2.5lbs from the Red Roof, U. Frei had 2 fish from the Island Pool and Eel Weir on worm and fly of 2.5 and 3lbs, D. Elliott had a 4lbs fish on fly from the Trout Pool, J.Klingers had a 3lbs fish on spinner from the Sand Hole, P. O’ Malley had a 6.5lbs fish on shrimp from the Black Hole, D. Mc Dowell had 2 fish of 3 and 4lbs on shrimp from the Red Roof, M. Barry had a 3lbs fish on worm from the Island Pool, T. Brien had 2 fish of 3 and 3.5lbs on fly from the Crooked Hole, P. Butler had a 3lbs fish on fly from the Sea Pools, B. Mc Cullough had 3 fish of 2,3 and 4lbs on spinner from the Eel Weir and New Bridge, N. Mc Intyre had a 2.5lbs fish on spinner from the Black Gutter, A. Ward had 2 3lbs fish on fly from the Black Hole, M. King had 2 fish of 4 and 5lbs on shrimp from the Money Hole, I. Doherty had a 5lbs fish on fly from the Sea Pools, J. Lyons from the U.S. had a 6lbs fish on fly from the Meadow, M. Mc Evoy had a 5lbs fish on shrimp from the Sea Pools, T. Lawless had a 3.5lbs fish on shrimp from the Wash Stones, A. Ward had a 3.5lbs fish on fly from the Black Hole and C. Dolan had 2 fish of 4 and 5lbs on fly from Lennox’s.

Sea Trout
Scale analysis carried out at the Inland Fisheries Ireland Lab in Dublin has determined that the large fish caught on the river in July were indeed sea trout. The scales suggest that the fish were 7 to 8 years old, had spawned multiple times and had normal growth rates up to the past 2 years when growth rates were much higher than would be expected. The scale samples were from 3 sea trout of 6.5lbs, 6.75lbs and 11.75lbs. Scale samples from some of the other fish caught in July have yet to be analysed.

Lost And Found
A small, short handled aluminium landing net has been found on the river and can be collected from the fishing tackle shop.
