Rain At Last

12 July 2010

Heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday morning caused the river to rise for the first time since Easter. Water levels only rose by a couple of inches but it was enough to produce a very large run of fish on Sunday and a good run of fish again today. The Sea Pools had been producing decent numbers of fish last week and after the fresh water running fish have been caught all over the upper stretches of the river also. Eleven fish were reported on Thursday 8th July, mainly from the Sea Pool on shrimp and fly, most around the 3 to 4lbs range. On Friday 9th M. Saurug had a 6lbs fish on fly from the Sea Pool. On Sunday 37 fish were reported, the highest daily total this season. Many anglers had multiple fish, including G. Morrow and D. Kennedy who returned 4 and 3 fish respectively from the Sea Pool on shrimp, P. White had 2 fish around 4lbs on fly from below Lennox’s, J. Root had 3 fish on shrimp from the Stoppage, S. Gallagher had 2 fish of 3 and 6lbs on green and Gold toby from the Stone Ditch and New Bridge, B. Likely had 2 fish from the Wash Stones and Sand Hole on Toby of 3 and 4lbs, A. Best had 2 fish both of 4lbs from the Sea Pool on fly, T. Mullins had 2 fish on prawn from the Meadow of 2.5 and 3.3lbs, S. Duncan had 2 3lbs fish on shrimp from the Meadow, G. Brian had 3 fish of 3,3 and 5lbs on black flying c from the Money Hole and Rooney’s Turn.
Today there were also a number of fish reported including one angler who had 3 on worm below the Four Masters’ Bridge.
Water levels remain low but there is the prospect of more rain for the week ahead which should keep a fresh in the river.

The Sea Pool This Evening .

Weather Outlook.

Today
Showers in the northwest will die out this evening, leaving it dry tonight with clear spells. There will be little or no wind and fog patches will form inland. Lowest temperatures 9 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow
A dry, bright start to Tuesday with fog patches quickly clearing. However, rain soon developing in the southwest and south will extend northwards during the day. The rain will be turn heavy at times over the southern half of the country but north Ulster will stay dry until evening. Easterly winds freshening as the day goes on. Highest temperatures 16 to 19 degrees Celsius.

Outlook
Headline : Changeable and unsettled weather will continue this week with showers or longer spells of rain especially midweek, but there will be some dry bright weather at times too. But it will be fresher and cooler than of late as the week progresses. Details : Tuesday night and Wednesday will be breezy and quite wet with spells of heavy rain or showers and widespread hill and coastal fog. Some thundery downpours are possible also. Winds fresh and gusty easterly with top temperatures 16 to 20 C., highest in the Midwest. Thursday and Friday will be fresher days with temperatures in the mid to high teens at best. Some dry, bright spells will develop each day, probably best of all on Friday, with some sunshine at times, but there will be showers also, some heavy. Winds fresh northwesterly on Thursday, but winds much slacker on Friday. Both nights will be quite cool with temperatures in single figures. Present indications suggest that Saturday should start off dry and mostly sunny, but wet and breezy weather is expected to move in off the Atlantic later in the day, but this rain should clear to scattered showers for Sunday.
